What to Wear Next Year

They always think ahead of time but are neither chess players nor market analysts. Some of the brightest fashion designers from Russia and overseas will show off their latest creations at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Moscow.

The eternal question what to wear next spring and summer will be at the top of the agenda from Friday to Tuesday, with Russian, British, Italian and American couturiers offering their fresh ideas.

The line up includes such brands as Frankie Morello, Costume National, Dasha Gauser and HakaMa among others as well as old school Russian designer Slava Zaitsev, who will kick open the show on Friday.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia formerly Russian Fashion Week has been held in Moscow for the past 10 years, becoming one of the most important events on the fashion calendar.

Apart from promoting glitz and glamour, RFW top priority has always been discovering new names and helping designers launch successful careers. According to some, RFW is “an excellent catwalk.” Others say they love it for its “avant-garde, special organization and unusual ‘non-Soviet’ view, not only on fashion, but also on what is going on in our country.”

Whatever you love it for, among the cool names to check out this time around is Von Vonni, the 32-year-old designer who spent his childhood in Armenia and Moscow and migrated to the USA in the early ’90s.

Having started sketching at the tender age of two, Von’s CV includes stints at Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, in addition to being the Creative Director for Varizioni, a NY-based chain of retail stores. At 24, he opened his first boutique in Miami, Florida, where he dressed socialites from all around the world. At 29 he debuted his eponymous line to retail and editorial acclaim.

Von Vonni has a fair chance of seducing Russian beauties with his signature dresses for day or night.

Fashionistas looking for rare names will not miss Peruvian designer Sitka Semsch, who studied in America and worked alongside such fashion idol as Michael Kors.

Upon returning to Peru, Semsch established her own studio to become recognized for her elegance and style. Her fashion house in Peru is among the best, Semsch creations range from cocktail dresses to bridal outfits as well as accessories, including shoes and jewelry.

Dasha Gauser is among the most successful and, more importantly, promising Russian designers famous for her unconventional dresses.

Her latest spring-summer collection is entitled Suprematism, like the famous art movement set up by the author of Black Circle, Kasimir Malevich, in Russia in 1915.

Gauser says she was inspired by Malevich, who became the lead male character of her collection.

“The next question was ‘who will become its heroine?’ When I start working on a collection, I write down some key words which describe the character of the collection most precisely. For instance sensuality, youth, shape, negligence, courage, asymmetry, audacity, authenticity, tough cookie,” the designer explained.

She says that next “summer will be bright”. It will be balancing between emerald and pink, pink and orange, beige and blue, orange and purple and so on with some colors reminiscent of paintings by Russian avant-garde artists.

Dasha Gauser’s brand celebrating its 5th birthday this year proudly keeps loyal to its golden rule to use only natural fabrics. Next season silk and cotton will be in the limelight.
